Crocels carries out a range of research and development into online communities, including increasing participation, understanding and facilitating the development of
social networks in online dating communities, building social and economic relationships through avatars and characters, enhancing the understanding of genres of web based communities using ecological cognition

Crocels also carries out a range of research into e-learning. The notable paper, 'The Internet for educating individuals with social impairments' is cited by many researchers and taught at universities around the world. Also, the pioneering paper, 'The Role of Multi-Agent Social Networking Systems in Ubiquitous Education' has received a lot of attention.
